What AEO and GEO actually mean

AEO, GEO and SEO, explained without the acronym soup

Three overlapping disciplines, often confused. AEO is about being the answer Google's box or PAA pulls. GEO is about being cited by AI engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity. SEO is about ranking the blue links. They share principles but the optimisation work and the reporting are not the same.

AEO vs SEO

SEO optimises a page to rank in the blue links. AEO optimises that same page so its first paragraph is the answer Google's snippet or PAA pulls. AEO is a subset of SEO but the structural rules are stricter: extractable answer first, max 40-60 words for paragraph snippets, schema markup required for some formats.

GEO vs AEO

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the newer sibling: getting cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Bing Copilot, Claude and Google's AI Overviews. The principles overlap with AEO but the citation mechanics differ. AI engines weigh topical authority, entity coverage and structured data more heavily than backlinks. We run both as one workstream.

Featured snippets are not dead

Some agencies claim featured snippets are losing relevance because of AI Overviews. False. The same content that wins a snippet is disproportionately likely to be cited in an AI Overview. Winning the snippet is now a leading indicator for AI citation. Track both.

FAQPage is for question/answer content you authored. QAPage is for user-generated Q&A pages (forums, community). Misusing FAQPage on a non-FAQ page can trigger a manual action. We deploy the right schema for the content type and validate every implementation.

Voice search optimisation is part of AEO. Natural-language query intent, conversational phrasing in answers, and Speakable JSON-LD on the passages you want assistants to read aloud. Google Assistant, Alexa and Siri all pull from snippet-eligible content first.
