Most European SEO is run from a single English playbook. Translated, not localised. Reported as one blended organic line.
A European SEO agency only earns the name when it can split a strategy across the markets that pay for the engagement. We are based in Amsterdam, in the EU, with senior consultants who have shipped multi-market rollouts across DACH, the Benelux, the Nordics, France, Iberia, Italy and the UK. Hreflang is verified per pair. Keyword research is native per database. Revenue is reported per country, not blended into one organic line that hides which market is actually working.

How a LASEO European SEO engagement runs
Five phases over the first 12 months. Each phase ends with a decision document and a deliverable shipped to your repo, your CMS or your reporting stack.
- 01
European market prioritisation (weeks 1-2)
Which 3-5 European markets actually return ROI in the next 12 months. We score by addressable search volume per SEMrush database (DE, FR, NL, ES, IT, UK, PL), current revenue contribution per country (GA4 country dimension), competitor density (Ahrefs Country Filter) and operational readiness (local fulfilment, VAT registration, language support). Output: ranked European market list with a quantified opportunity per market.
- 02
URL architecture decision (weeks 2-3)
ccTLD (.de, .fr) vs subfolder (/de/, /fr/) vs subdomain, decided per European market on data. Score sheet covers traffic potential, link equity transfer, dev cost, brand recognition in country and ICANN geo-targeting fit. If you are already on the wrong structure, we deliver a migration plan with 301 maps and a six-week implementation window.
- 03
Hreflang deployment and verification (weeks 3-6)
Implementation via HTML tags, HTTP headers or sitemap depending on stack. Every page in every European market gets a return-tag pair to every other market. x-default explicitly set. We verify with Merkle's hreflang testing tool and a custom Screaming Frog crawl that maps the full hreflang graph and flags missing or self-referential pairs across DE, AT, CH and the rest of your tree.
- 04
Per-market content and local link plan (months 2-6)
Market-level keyword research from per-database SEMrush queries. Native translator brief per page (we do not translate ourselves). Local link acquisition targets per European market: country directories, partner blogs, native PR placements, association memberships. Country-specific content briefs for the 20-50 pages that drive the majority of organic revenue per market.
- 05
Per-market revenue tracking dashboard (month 2 onward)
Looker Studio pulling per-country GSC properties, GA4 country dimension and per-market campaign tagging. Monthly scorecard shows clicks, sessions, conversions and revenue per European country. You see which market compounds and which one needs more content or more local links, not a blended organic number that hides the answer.

Think of us asthe European SEO team behind your EU and UK expansion.
Your local marketing leads own brand, partnerships and tone of voice per country. We own the European SEO foundation underneath: hreflang implementation, ccTLD vs subfolder architecture, per-database keyword research across SEMrush and Ahrefs, Shopify Markets configuration, GSC properties split per country, and a Looker Studio dashboard that shows revenue per market every month. The split most European rollouts get wrong because the agency tries to do both layers and does neither well.
What a European SEO agency actually does
European SEO, explained without the agency fog
European SEO is three problems stacked: the technical foundation (hreflang, canonicals, URL architecture), the localisation layer per country (transcreation, currency, fulfilment, VAT) and the reporting layer (split your data by European country or stay blind). Each problem has a wrong answer that is easy and a right answer that is expensive to undo later.
Hreflang across European markets is not a switch
Hreflang tells Google which version of a page belongs to which language and region. It does not boost rankings, it prevents the German version from outranking the Austrian one. Implementation has to be bi-directional: page A points to page B with a return-tag, page B points back to A. Missing return-tags between DE-AT-CH silently invalidate the whole DACH signal.
ccTLD vs subfolder for European markets
ccTLDs (.de, .fr, .nl, .es, .it) give the strongest country signal and the highest local click-through but split link equity and cost more to run. Subfolders (/de/, /fr/) consolidate authority on .com but rely on hreflang to disambiguate. Subdomains (de.) are the worst of both worlds. The right decision depends on budget, brand presence per European market and the link equity you already hold on your root.
GSC International Targeting is largely deprecated
Google removed International Targeting from Search Console in 2022 for sites that use hreflang correctly. If you are still setting country targeting in GSC as your European strategy, the signal no longer carries the weight it used to. Hreflang is the canonical answer for European sites running subfolders or subdomains. Set up per-country GSC properties for reporting, not for targeting.
Translation vs transcreation vs localisation
Machine translation ranks for nobody in Germany, France or the Netherlands. Direct human translation ranks for some queries. Transcreation, adapting the content to local search intent, idiom and SERP, ranks the way you want it to. We do not translate ourselves: we brief native translators and integrate their output via Weglot, Shopify native, Sanity locale fields or your CMS.
Native keyword research per European database
Run SEMrush and Ahrefs queries per database (DE, AT, CH, FR, BE, NL, ES, IT, PL, UK, SE, DK, NO, FI). The same English term can have wildly different volume and intent between US and UK databases. For German, French, Spanish, Italian and Dutch markets, native research uncovers terms a translated US list will never surface. This is the difference between ranking in Europe and just existing there.
Local backlinks per European market matter
A .de strategy without German links is a domain with no authority in Germany. Each European market needs its own link acquisition plan: country directories, partner blogs in language, native digital PR, association memberships. We define targets per market and either run the outreach ourselves or hand off briefs to your in-country team.
Why LASEO vs alternatives
European SEO agencies compared honestly
Generalist agencies, US shops with a European desk, freelancers and in-house hires all have legitimate use cases. Here is where a senior European SEO partner fits and where it does not.
Translates and hopes
- Generated once via a plugin, never verified, never re-tested after theme updates. Return-tag pairs frequently broken between DE-AT-CH.
- Whatever the dev team had time for. Often subdomains because they were easiest to spin up.
- Auto-translated US keyword list pasted into every European market. Same terms targeted in DE, FR, NL.
- We will translate it for you (with a junior or worse, an LLM).
- Single blended organic line covering all European markets. Cannot tell which country pays for itself.
- Run the same generic link campaign across every European market. Mostly English-language sites.
Owns the European technical layer
- Implementation method chosen per stack (HTML, HTTP header, sitemap), full European graph verified with Merkle and Screaming Frog, re-tested after every theme deploy.
- ccTLD vs subfolder vs subdomain scored per European market on real data: traffic potential, link equity, dev cost, ICANN geo-targeting fit. Decision documented.
- Separate SEMrush + Ahrefs queries per database (DE/AT/CH/FR/BE/NL/ES/IT/PL/UK/SE/DK/NO/FI). Native research for non-English markets. Intent classified per term per country.
- We do not translate. We partner with native translators (transcreation) and integrate output via Weglot, Shopify native, Sanity locale fields. Briefs are written by us, the wording is owned by a native.
- Per-country GSC properties, GA4 country dimension, Looker Studio dashboard split per European market. Monthly scorecard with revenue per country.
- 30-60 native link targets per priority European market: country directories, partner blogs in language, native PR. Either we run outreach or your in-country team executes against our briefs.

Honest answers about European SEO
What buyers actually ask before signing a European SEO retainer.

A European SEO agency runs the strategy market by market, not market by template. That means separate SEMrush and Ahrefs research per database (DE, FR, NL, ES, IT, UK, PL and so on), hreflang implemented and verified across every market pair rather than generated once and forgotten, a URL architecture decision (ccTLD vs subfolder vs subdomain) scored on real data per market, and per-country GSC properties feeding a Looker Studio dashboard that splits revenue by country. A generalist agency typically translates the homepage, drops a plugin-generated hreflang and reports one blended organic line. The difference shows up in month four, when one approach starts compounding per market and the other keeps reporting traffic that nobody can attribute to a specific country.
